About the Ives Collective

Stephen and Susan together - about

Dear Friends,

Ten years ago, when the Ives Quartet dissolved, what emerged in its place was something both unexpected and deeply sustaining: the Ives Collective. Rather than marking an ending, it became the beginning of an evolving musical community—one that continues to thrive through collaboration with a wide and ever-expanding circle of chamber musicians.

From the outset, we set out to build a flexible artistic model that would allow us to explore repertoire in fresh ways each season. Each year, our programming is shaped in conversation with our guest artists, ensuring that every concert reflects not only our vision but also the creative voices of those we invite into the work.

At the heart of the Collective are our loyal and gifted collaborators, each of whom joins us across the season and plays a vital role in uncovering hidden gems alongside the great works of the chamber canon. Their artistry continually expands what we think we know about this repertoire, bringing clarity, surprise, and depth to every program.

Perhaps most meaningful of all is the relationship we’ve built between artists and audience. Our patrons have come to know many members of the Collective personally through our post-concert conversations, where musicians and listeners meet in a shared space of curiosity and connection. These exchanges remind us that chamber music is not only something to be heard, but something that only comes fully alive when we’re in the room with you.

With gratitude,
